Voluntary goosebumps

The most unusual power I possess is to take conscious control of my goosebumps reflex. If you want to see me get goosebumps, I've got you covered, day or night. If you try to give me goosebumps with a light tickle, I can veto that at will. I'll grant that it's not that impressive, but it might be good enough to get me on the next season of Heroes.

PS - I don't know where this ability came from.
PPS - It seems to be controlled from the muscles on my back and neck.

Um, that is weird.

It is indeed strange, but I've hardly ever thought of it that way myself. I have this weird feeling that I must have learned it somehow.

Erin Marie said...

Okay, now that just creeps me out even more.

Probably because you put 'learned' in italics.

I feel like I'm part of some crazy horror movie/tv series.

John said...

It does give the sentence an eerie feel, doesn't it? Then again, if italics creep you out, you might have more problems than being in a horror movie.

I was thinking about this last night.

I think there's some kind of story in this ... a guy dies because of reading something in italics and I'm carted away to the loony bin saying 'It was the italics I tell you! The italics killed him!'

Creepy.

Hey! It seems someone else in the world has the same ability as me! Yahoo!

I've always wondered if it was genetic or learned, but I will admit it seems to respond well to practise! (Even though its a pretty odd thing to practise) ;) Now if only I had one of the more USEFUL mutant abilities...

Cool! I thought perhaps that I had suffered some kind of head injury that had dislodged some neurons or something, but if other people can do it, then my grey matter is probably intact.

I stumbled accross your blog

I have the same 'power' I can voluntarily give my self goosebumps at will. everybody says I am imagining a previous feeling or thought of fear. but that is shit. you said it starts at the top of your neck. Is it at the top of your spine where it connects to your skull.? Is it like contracting a nerve bundle? ( the only way I can explain the sensation ) and when you do its almost like warm treacle being poured down the INSIDE of your body spreading to your extremeties.? if that is what you got then we are the same.
VOLUNTARY ARRECTIS PILLIRI

It is usually a childhood compensation for traumatic lengthened illnesses. Ie asthma. ]
another result of this and they usually go had in hand is the ability to slightly control heart rate. try it out on an exercise machine with pulse detectors. maybe, just maybe!

there are only a few official studies on the net. One dating back to the 1800s or something other than that NO ONE WANTS TO KNOW.

Ive even asked top neurologists in Bangkoks leading hospitals, and they shrugged shoulders and said
KHUN BLEEARK which is Thai for
wierdo ( much as your friends and mine think )

I hope that helps. I thought I was all alone in the world of voluntary goosebumps. I have yet to put my power to use cuz am still in process of designing Lycra body suit/costume.

discuss further?

Fear is the mind killer !

Yes, it is right at the top of my spine, though I'm not sure how I'd describe the action I take to set it off. I know it's easiest when I'm breathing in. I'll have to try the heart rate thing.

I've seen a few isolated posts from other people claiming to have this ability/condition, but no medical studies.

I also can do this since I was a child. It does start at the base of the skull and sort of trickles down. In my experience it is stronger in some parts of the body than in others: shoulders, arms, thighs. It responds well to training; if you don't do it for years your ability to do it diminishes somewhat.

I have actually found a use for this ability: since it increases the surface area of the skin it helps the body radiate excess heat faster during a hot day.

John said...

Interesting. I wouldn't have thought the effect would be all that noticeable.

I can do it too! I'm not alone in the world! I just wish I knew why we could do it.

John said...

I'm starting to think it might be worth starting a Facebook group for this.

I can do this too. I have always been able to do it. I have a distinct memory of showing this to my first grade teacher. I thought that I was the only person on the planet that had this power. I can also cause my nipples to become erect at will via a similar mechanism.

I just wish I would have gotten a more useful talent.

Very strange! My action is purely mechanical - Don't need to use emotion(joy/fear) to bring it out, and it feels like the same feeling of when I listen to music.

I can't explain it how I do it really ... Its like I am doing an invisible pull but I'm not really pulling but something happens.

At first I thought it was an induce of Adrenalin, but no I don't think it is - since my heart rate seems normal ... Perhaps another type?

I posted a video of me doing this on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRfHfbpODe8&feature=channel

Others have described the same method of "contracting the nerve bundle at the base of the skull", and the sensation of something flowing down over the rest of the body from there. There is a pleasant tingle, like an electric current when I bring on this sensation of "emotional enhancement", even in the absence of emotion.

Thought I was a freak...

lol my name is also John.

And i'm also in the same boat.

I've hidden this from everyone else in my life since i was a child in fear of being labled "wierd" or "different"

i once tryed and people just didn't understand and didn't really want to because i don't think they had answers.

At the risk of sounding like a raving idiot i've always believed it to be in someway asscioated with "healing"

I've been looking around apparently their may be some scientific grounds to this.

It's apprently also good as a defensive mechanisim IE your more responsive and in tune with your surroundings and do certainly feel like this like in a "hyper sensative zone"

i've also read/heard that there's a common thread between those of us who can do this and some lesser exaples of "mental abilities"

if anyone would like to talk further please email:johnbrown406@msn.com

Hi yeah i can do this too! Send the cold feeling from the back of neck down the back bone through the arms body and legs. also my nipples get hard too! able to do this since child. Quite a useless natural ability yeh? Nice to know other people also have this ability! Hey maybe this only happen to men!? Pardon my not so good english! bye!

Hey I can also do that! and yeah my name is also sort of like John, however it is spelt "Jan". Anyway, im 16 and i just found out recently. However it didn't amused that much until one time when i was at the gym using the bike, i tried to bring it out and it gave me a boost! i reached like over 200 rmp for a minute. After that discovery started searching the web for voluntary goosebumps. it's just nice to find out that i'm not the only one coz when i told my friends they gave "the look" :)

so if anyone inhere msg's me make sure you check your junkmail for a response in the future.

i can do this too! i thought i was the only one because everyone i asked just looked at me like im a freak. i even asked a neurologist about this (because im a nurse) and he can't provide an answer.

i read one of the comments here that says "It is usually a childhood compensation for traumatic lengthened illnesses. Ie asthma. ]another result of this and they usually go had in hand is the ability to slightly control heart rate. try it out on an exercise machine with pulse detectors. maybe, just maybe!"

I had asthma as a child

yes i have asthma as a child and i've got to try that heart rate control!

Been abble to do this for years im 22 now and cant remember the fist time i did it

I find it easyer to do when lisning to music with high tones in it but am still abble to do it at will without the music

And i am offten useing it as a way of cooling my body down after a long walk

i also have this kind of ability. But i am still trying to figure out what are its significance other than just raising your hair follicles. i just hope it can do more than that. and it is such a big relief that there are others out there who can do the same thing. i also met someone when i was still studying in the university who can do voluntary goosebumps.

Anonymous said...

i do this all the time. its not creepy at all.

Anonymous said...

also, its not at the top of my spine, its like on the top and back part of my head.

Anonymous said...

I do this and it kind of makes me cold afterwards. I can trigger it on other people too, by doing certain things to various parts of the body. Usually on the back and neck.

Anonymous said...

Hmm... I can do this too, but it isn't always voluntary. I can sometimes control it and other times i can't, and sometimes it happens without me wanting it to.

Anonymous said...

I think anybody can do this, if they concentrate and practice enough. I kind of focus on the top of my spine, and while either inhaling or exhaling, I kind of do what you would do to wiggle your ears, but a little different. You like expand your neck and relax it. this should help if you've never done it before. It takes a few tries before you can do it right though.

John said...

I wonder whether it could be taught to someone who hasn't tried before.

Recently I've discovered for certain that it's not related to breathing, which I thought it might have been. But since I was able to do it while holding my breath, it must be something in the muscles somewhere.

It's great to finally talk to others who can do this too!
I'm 22 now, and I've been able to trigger the goosebumps at will for as long as I can remember. I can do it at will without the help of Music or thoughts, it starts from the back of my head/top of my spine and flows through my body. I can control it as easily as moving my hand. Some of the interesting things I notice while doing it, is that i can't breath while doing it and my heart beats faster. I always thought that i have the ability to control my heart beats, but i've never been brave enough to try it.
I think the feeling is most intense when i take a deep breath and hold it.

John said...

Another couple of quick tests: the effect is easiest to produce when I nod my head forwards, push my shoulders forwards and breathe in. None of these things are essential, but they are the strongest and most consistent way for me to achieve voluntary goosebumps.

I've been able do it ever since I could remember. It would come when I was mad kinda like a pulse. During my teenage years I noticed I could turn it on for seconds at a time. Now I can sustain it longer without having to think or listen or see anything ... But I still have figured out how to get the same feeling as if I got goosebumps if I wasn't expecting it ..when I get goosebumps like that my my eyes get big and feel as if they were going to pop out and start to water, also I get a strong tingling sensation in my face and shoulders ,legs.
