Hoaxing by proxy

I don't understand how hoax emails get passed on beyond the first iteration. Surely people look things up before trusting their email. Has spam taught us nothing? How easy is it to just web-search for "hoax [email subject]" before passing on some dire warning about killer porpoises or poisonous vitamins? Really, just take a second and read something from the source instead of forty-eighth-hand email.

PS - I guess it's like urban myths.
PPS - "I heard it from my friend's cousin's accountant's aunt."
